Embrace your Dented Walls and Scruffy Furniture

27 Jun

One very obvious look for a Mediterranean house is the use of lots of wrought iron both inside and out, but unless you live in California or indeed the Mediterranean, fancy wrought iron bars at the windows, whilst they may seem appealing in the current era of household theft and are ideal for keeping unwanted intruders out, will look ridiculous in the U.K.

Swags and Tails offer a Timeless Elegance Anywhere

Curtains on this type of window are often rather decorative to draw the eye away from the metal bars, which can give the feeling to the overseas visitor that you are being “detained at Her Majesty’s pleasure”. Swags and Tails are still used quite extensively for a more formal look, but usually dressed from a wooden curtain pole.

Plain wooden curtain poles can be jazzed up a bit still using a simple curtain treatment such as a skirted heading, but with the use of a matching fringe edging the skirt and possibly matching curtain holdbacks.

The Art of Interior Design is to Carry a Theme or Colour Effortlessly

Wrought iron or black painted curtain poles are a great way to introduce this kind of look and will compliment the Moorish lights and accessories.

And with todays innovative design ideas, you will not be restricted to a Shepards Crook or Fleur de Lys finial.

There is sure to be a Finial Shape to Tempt the Most Discerning

Arches, alcoves and niches also feature highly in this style of home and can make a useful space or feature design detail out of the smallest of areas. This often rather fanciful decor can be used to make a fun feature out of perhaps the cupboard under the stairs that used to house the vacuum cleaner, paint tins and cleaning “stuff”. Painted in a contrasting colour to the hallway, a small wash basin, perhaps a loo where the slope of the stairs makes standing impossible and an exotic Moorish ceiling light will make an invaluable addition to the house, with not too much expense.

Work around the natural light levels of the room. If it is dark, then warm it up with a lovely yellow stucco effect wall finish and if the room is already light and bright, then embrace it and go for white. This could be a great look for your home if your walls are badly plastered, chipped or dented – the distressed look. Special paint effects such as sponging or dragging with a colour wash will turn a disastrous wall into one with a rather aged attractive finish, the play of light over the different surfaces offering an appropriately textured finish. A miss-match of old furniture is also perfectly acceptable, but unify them with some common feature such as matching cushions or throws.

As with all decor decisions, more is not necessarily better.

Careful Thought to What Matches

And What Looks a Jumbled Mess Is Important

Don’t despair, if your heart is set on this type of decor but the finances are a little stretched at the moment, then simply changing your window treatments perhaps to a pair of curtains or a new roller blind will inject a little sunshine into the room – the rest can come later !!!!

Light and Bright Colours are Ideal – Avoid Muddy Clouded Colours

There are many Spanish-style chandeliers and secondary lighting readily available and in most home furnishing departments and shops there is always an absolute abundance of Moorish style lanterns and candle holders featuring quatrefoil cut outs which will always be guaranteed to add a sense of romance – particularly relevant in dining rooms and bedrooms.

Moorish Themed Lights and Accessories Can Cross the Bounderies between Modern and Traditional

Choose your accessories wisely and a theme can be set merely by your choice of artwork and ornaments – lighting also of course plays a large part in setting the scene.

Try to Cheer Up – Get Active with your Interior – Blinds

22 Dec

Window blinds can cheer you up – if you do not belive me read on…

summer holdays

Happy Family Holidays

We are now getting really fed up with the weather and with ours and indeed most people’s Christmases in ruins let’s be positive and try to think towards and remember back to the warm summer sunshine lifting our spirits.

If you are marooned at home then it’s a good time to get out the paint pot and immerse yourself in a project. Whilst you may not fancy slogging around the freezing shops, shopping online offers the easy option, especially with sites such as poles and blinds that are accompanied by informative buying guides and a blog.

venetian blinds

Venetian Blinds are Ideal for Patio Doors

Venetian blinds are a great way to dress patio doors. They can open fully out of the way when the door has plenty of traffic, most can be wiped clean, catering for the odd spillage at the barbeque and can be closed tightly at night offering complete or partial privacy as the case may be. Venetian blinds are available in a wide range of colours and many of the fabrics are also available with special properties to deal with the issues that often arise with a sunny south facing window.

Vertical Blinds are a Multi-functional Window Finish

A vertical blind makes an ideal finish for the smallest of windows as it stacks neatly to one side of the window allowing for maximum light to enter the room or can be used in series to deal with the largest of windows. Bay windows can also be fitted with vertical blinds, with each section of the window being fitted with an individual blind.

Many of the vertical blinds are also available as roller blinds so they can be used in the same or adjoining rooms for a co-ordinated look.

Colours of course will have a great impact on the look and feel of the room. Whoever said that Blue and Green should never be seen was talking absolute rubbish, they are on the same side of the colour wheel and to my mind as long as the blue is a greeny blue and not a reddy blue and the green is not a yellowy or muddy olive green they will make a fresh and vibrant combination.

You have to be very brave to use black or dark grey as the main colour in a scheme, it can be quite claustrophobic with scary connotations. Black can however if combined with other colours and textures look absolutely stunning.

Dark blue will happily blend with any colour. Usually blue is associated with a calm and restful decor but as shown with the drama of black and dark grey, looks superb in an uncluttered decor that is inherently very 21st century.

Red accessories and window finishes set against a black feature wall will offer a striking explosion of colour and with just the inclusion of a bamboo plant can instantly look quite Japanese – black used in interior design is thought to be lucky in many Asian cultures.

Poles and Blinds: Relaxed Modern Look

9 Dec
modern window blind

Wood Can Form the Basis for a Striking Scheme

This style of decor is an informal aspect of a modern style. Contemporary living does not have to be stark and clinical.  This look has a pleasing, comfortable feel which is often synonymous with a slightly rustic look.

Roller blinds and Roman blinds in soft greens and golds will match well with pine furniture and wooden flooring. Wooden curtain poles are also perfect for a relaxed modern look, metal curtain poles unless they are traditional brass or wrought iron will always look very contemporary due to their late arrival on the interiors scene. Wooden venetian blinds will suit any colour scheme and look equally attractive from the inside as well as the outside.

informal curtain headings

Florals Always Ensure a Softness

Floral fabrics will always have an enduring appeal that transcends fashion trends. There is currently a floral renaissance but with a modern element. The vintage looking florals will always create a perfect country cottage look, not what is required for a modern look.

Simple curtain headings such as double pinch pleat or pencil pleat headings will suit this style of decor rather than the more formal look of a triple pinch pleat heading and remember that while buying and arranging the finishing touches to the room are the really fun part,  as someone famous, but I cannot remember who it was once said, ” be careful not to over egg the pudding”.  Clutter is not synonymous with a modern decor.

In modern interior design a tablescape is now well recognised. It is the clever grouping of unrelated objects combined harmoniously into one visually pleasing display, but make sure they are items that you like and perhaps need in the room or the end result will create the feeling of living in a property developer’s show home.

24 hour Shopping: Window Blinds

14 Nov

Whether you are nipping into Tesco’s for a packet of sugar at 3.00 o clock in the morning or doing your Christmas shopping on a Sunday afternoon, the convenience of the shops being open for extended hours is now a matter of course.

Buying on-line is also definitely here to stay.  Shopping online allows you to buy whatever you wish whilst also cooking supper or during the ads of your favourite television programme – no need to tire yourself out dragging around the shops only to find a very limited range of products ranging from microwave meals to window blinds.  It would be physically impossible for the shops to carry the vast selection of ranges that on-line buying offers, no matter what you are looking for.

Choosing your new look for a room or indeed the whole house can be exciting, but take a step back and do a bit of on-line research with a professional company such as Polesandblinds so you can consider the most effective way to go about it.  Are you looking for a relaxed or formal classical look or a relaxed or formal modern look?

What's It to Be - Trendy or Traditional

The colour scheme is the building block for the rest of the scheme to be built upon. Consider if you are opting for wallpaper or paint for the walls. There are many fabulous wallpaper choices often with matching or co-ordinating fabrics. A great look which is now back in favour is to paper a feature wall with a paper that will co-ordinate with the fabric.  Harlequin Fabrics, Sandersons and John Wilman spring to mind as the first port of call to find exactly what you are looking for with combination wallpapers and fabrics.

Chic or Simple - Florals Appeal to Most

If painted walls are your preference then there are literally thousands of paint colours so leave making that decision until later, you will certainly find a colour to suit the scheme. Once you have chosen the colour theme, then choose your fabrics and window treatments both of which should try to be in keeping with the architectural style of the room as well as the furniture.

There have been many remarkable strides forward with the design and manufacture of curtain poles and blinds over the last few years.  It can however be a minefield trying to decide which is best suited to your decor or type of window. There are many different types, weights and sizes of curtain poles, finial designs and styles of blinds so a little knowledge on the subject may well help you to make the right decision.

A Break From Colours

8 Jul

Don’t be afraid of colour especially in a north facing room – it will give warmth to the room and will bring your personality to life. Bright on bright is not easy to live with, but bright combined with dark earthy colours makes for a striking combination.

Introducing the odd piece of furniture that may well have been destined for the tip will add a touch of traditional styling, but be sure to have the furniture upholstered in a fabric that blends with the overall décor of the room and definitely do not over clutter the room to avoid the Victorian parlour look.

No-one would actually want to sit in this style of seating and as you will want your living room to be a welcoming and comfortable haven, be sure to include some seating that you can sink into for a read or relax.

Trimmings and tassels have made a come back so for a truly decadent finish be sure to include some kind of embellishment even if it’s just on a few of the cushions and be sure to have ample amounts of fabric in the curtains, perhaps even puddling them on the floor for a truly voluptuous finish.

Innovative 20th century style mirrors and glassware are still being reproduced relatively cheaply and are readily available in any good quality home furnishing shops.

Modern Contemporary – as long as the décor is minimal, light and airy, then almost anything goes. The key is creating a calm atmosphere where unnecessary accessories are avoided and clutter is kept out of sight in cupboards; not an easy décor to maintain with a young family.

UPLIGHT NEUTRALS WITH A SPOT OF COLOUR

Metal curtain poles are usually the name of the game in a modern décor and there is a myriad of choice from Poles and Blinds.com

Hasta Vision 28mm Genuine Stainless Steel curtain pole set.

CHIC - MODERN - ADAPTABLE

The sculptural shapes of the wooden finials used as the detailing for this trendy curtain pole from the Hasta range will create an interesting illusion of space particularly when the curtain pole is used in a room with little other structural interest.

If the curtain pole is used with a neutral heavily textured curtain fabric, the tonal effect of the wood grain in the oak colouring for light naturals and the coffee colouring for deeper tonal fabrics will make a stimulating focal point to the window treatment.   The circular cut out feature of the finial unifies the circular detailing on the wall fixing bracket, harmonizing the overall of the curtain pole.
